History
The most credible version (according to the authors) is that ALSA was conceived under a pandanus tree at Spookys Point, Angourie, circa 2004. Numerous false starts were subsequently endured by founding father Strain, who then lucked into the boyish enthusiasm of the Patron, Legatt SC and potential break away splitter Warburton. Peace was declared, and ALSA was born.
Mission
ALSA’s mission is to offer a peak body in which Australasian surfing lawyers can develop friendships and camaraderie amongst its members. ALSA aims to contribute to the education of its members by organising educational conferences each year. Where possible, ALSA will, through its members, assist “not for profit” groups involved in the surfing community and other groups interested in matters concerning the ocean and its environment. Through its charitable arm, ALSA aims to assist approved projects or charities.
ALSA is also the official legal counsel for Surfrider Foundation (Australia) and also assists SurfAid and other surf related organisations from time to time.
